Oil pulling is one of the oldest teeth cleaning techniques. This technique has been used for centuries for teeth cleaning and whitening and also for promoting gum health and removing the harmful bacteria from the mouth cavity.
Oil pulling has many benefits for a number of conditions, such as skin problems, arthritis, headaches, infections, asthma and many more. Besides all these benefits, oil pulling is a great way to improve your oral health, whiten your teeth and heal sensitive gums.
How is oil pulling performed?
It’s a very simple procedure. To do the oil pulling you will need just some coconut, olive or sesame oil. Just swish the oil in your mouth for 15 to 20 minutes, spit it and rinse. You will have the best results if you do this in the morning before breakfast. But in case you have more serious dental problems, do it before every meal.
Here are the steps you need to follow:
Put 1-2 teaspoons of the vegetable based oil in your mouth.
Then swish for 20 minutes. The time is set to 20 minutes because it’s been proven that 20 minutes are just enough to break through plaque and bacteria. You will feel the oil getting thicker and milky and it when you spit it out, you’ll notice it’s milky white.
Spit the oil and in any case don’t swallow it, because it’s ridden with toxins, bacteria and other harmful substances.
After you spit the oil, rinse well with lukewarm water.
When you’re finished brush your teeth as you would normally do.
Add a drop or two of your favorite essential oil if you can’t stand the taste of the oil in your mouth. You can use any flavor you like, whether it’s peppermint, cinnamon or any other.
If you are pregnant you should first consult your doctor before trying this.
How does oil pulling work?
Our salivary glands store toxins and when we perform oil pulling the saliva production increases and the toxins in the saliva get trapped in the oil and get out of our system once we spit the oil out.
The coconut oil is in advantage of the other oils because it has antibacterial properties and a much milder taste compared to other oils. This is the reason why many oral health specialists recommend it for dental hygiene.
If you regularly use oil pulling, it will make your teeth whiter and smoother and remove any trace of plaque.
